Do-no-harm policy
Introduction
As a human rights organization, we are committed to upholding the dignity, safety and wellbeing of all individuals we work with, including our beneficiaries, staff, volunteers and partners. This do-no-harm policy serves as a guiding framework to ensure that our work does not inadvertently cause harm or reinforce existing inequalities and injustices.
Guiding principles
Respect for human dignity. All interactions, programmes and communications must respect the inherent dignity of individuals and communities.
Nondiscrimination. We uphold inclusivity, ensuring that no one is excluded or harmed based on gender, race, age, ethnicity, religion, sect or belief, disability, gender identity sexual orientation, political beliefs, or socioeconomic status.
Participation and inclusion. We promote the meaningful participation of affected communities, particularly marginalized and vulnerable groups, in decision-making processes.
Conflict sensitivity. We assess and mitigate risks that our activities might contribute to conflict or tensions in the communities we serve.
Accountability and transparency. We maintain clear and open communication with stakeholders and accept responsibility for the outcomes of our work.
Risk mitigation measures
Impact assessments. Before implementing any project, we conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential harms and develop strategies to prevent them.
Safeguarding measures. We implement strict policies on child protection, gender-based violence prevention and data privacy to protect vulnerable individuals.
Ethical research and data use. All data collection and research activities must adhere to informed consent, confidentiality and ethical standards.
Capacity building. Our staff are trained in human rights principles, ethical engagement and harm prevention strategies.
Feedback and complaint mechanisms. We have established accessible, confidential, and responsive mechanisms for individuals to report harm or concerns.
Response to harm
If harm occurs, we will promptly investigate, take corrective actions and provide the necessary support to affected individuals or communities.
Partnerships or programmes that violate the do-no-harm principle will be reassessed, and corrective actions—including termination of partnerships—will be taken if necessary.
Implementation and monitoring
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, contractors and partners.
Compliance is monitored through regular evaluations, feedback mechanisms and external audits.
Continuous learning and adaptation will be integrated to improve harm prevention efforts.
