‘No permission needed’:
Defending the right to self-identity
In a society where too many are denied the right to define their own identities, transgender persons in Pakistan face growing threats to their fundamental freedoms. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018, once hailed as a landmark law, is now under fire—with the right to self-perceived gender identity facing serious rollbacks.
Our national campaign, ‘No permission needed,’ calls for the restoration and defense of this essential right. We believe that every person has the inherent right to live, work, and identify without state interference or societal discrimination.
What we’re fighting for
- Reinstate the right to self-identity under the 2018 Act by end-2025.
- Promote accurate, respectful language and public understanding of trans rights.

What we’re doing
Throughout the campaign, we’re engaging both online and on the ground through:
- Short videos and explainers on trans identity and transgender persons’ legal rights.
- A video podcast featuring trans activists and legal experts.
- A powerful essay on the lived experiences of trans persons.
- Civil society dialogues in Islamabad and Karachi.
- An open letter to lawmakers, demanding full implementation of the 2018 Act.

How you can help
- Share our campaign posts using #NoPermissionNeeded and #TransRightsAreHumanRights
- Sign and share our open letter calling for the full implentation of the 2018 Act.
- Host or attend a dialogue at your university, workplace or community.
- Use respectful, self-affirming language when referring to trans persons
Why it matters
Limiting a person’s identity to paperwork or state approval is not just unjust—it’s inhumane. Inclusive societies don’t just tolerate diversity—they thrive on it. Trans people in Pakistan deserve dignity, visibility and legal protection—not fear and marginalization.
This campaign is not just about laws. It’s about lives, voices, and the right to be.
